State of the Union for Couples
A state of the union is a comprehensive science-based assessment process to discover needed areas of growth, development and improvement in your relationship. Couples can have a state of the union assessment done at any point in their relationship, whether they are newlywed, married with children, or empty nesters. If you believe there are areas that can be improved upon in your marriage, a state of the union assessment is the perfect next step.
Here is what to expect in the State of the Union for couples:
First, you and your spouse will meet with Dr. Bisignano together. She will find out a lot about your relationship. She wants to understand what it is about you and your spouse that brought together, marry and desire to share a life together. She will ask questions about the story of your relationship. Some of the questions she will ask:
- Where did you meet?
- What attracted you to one another?
- How did you decide to marry?
- Do you have children?
- What have been some of the good times in your relationship?
- What have been some of the more challenging times?
Once you have met with Dr. Bisignano, she will then have you complete 2 assessments. An assessment is like a questionnaire or a self-report. There are no right or wrong answers. The first one is a comprehensive relationship assessment. It is done online. It is private, secure and confidential. You don’t share your results with your spouse.
The second assessment is an attachment assessment. This is also done online. This set of questions examine how secure your attachment is with people in your life. Once you and your partner have completed both assessments, Dr. Bisignano will analyze the results.
The second and third sessions are individual sessions with Dr. Bisignano. Each of you will meet with her one-on-one. She will then ask you questions, like:
- Where were you born and raised?
- What was your family like?
- Tell me about other relationships?
- Have you experienced difficult or distressing events in your life?
Once all of the sessions and the assessments are complete, Dr. Bisignano will do an in-depth analysis of your relationship. You will then meet altogether where she will provide the results of the state of your union.
Dr. Bisignano’s assessment includes a specific treatment plan tailored to your unique relationship dynamics and growth areas. Dr. Bisignano uses research and scientific-based interventions and strategies. A treatment plan is like a roadmap that gives you and your spouse a clear direction for getting your relationship back on track to health and vitality.
At this point, you and your spouse can make an informed decision on the best course of action for your relationship, which may include couples therapy with Dr. Bisignano in her office, virtual online therapy, or a relationship intensive.
